Artifact

I created a podcast as an introduction to online learning for parents and students. This is an important resource for our new models of remote Zoomed education. Parents are busy and often not able to supervise students as they navigate new learning platforms. This podcast will be attached to my Google Classroom in materials and be available whenever students need to review how to access information. I anticipate using it as an audio newsletter which may be easier to access than a video. It can also supplement more detailed videos. I have created written newsletters however, I think that this format may prove more time effective to create consistent and ongoing communication for parents and students alike.

Reflections
This artifact aligns most closely with performance indicator 6.a "Foster a culture where students take ownership of their learning goals and outcomes in both independent and group settings." Providing visual and audible guides to online learning platforms, communication media, and assignments creates scaffolding to support independent student learning. For middle school students that are still developing executive function, scaffolds like a verbal podcast or a video, are extremely important resources to support their growth toward greater independence. Although I am trying to foster student independence it is also extremely important for parents to a part of the learning team. Providing regular newsletters and readily accessible visual and verbal podcasts are a wonderful way to encourage deeper parent engagement. This also provides an invaluable resource when parents are trying to help their children access the tools at their disposal. Additionally, well planned and informative podcasts can eliminate more emails and questions as the instructions and expectations are made public and explicit.
