Artifact
This standard involves preparing students to use technology appropriately and effectively. I chose to create an animated video that explains the elements of fair use. This is an area in which it is important to instruct early and frequently as students begin to use technology at such a young age. My video explains what copyright means, what it affects and how material can most appropriately and effectively be used under the guidelines of fair use. I have used the video with students to review how to handle media when completing research or preparing for performances. This is very important when instructing students in dance as they want to use music that is popular, yet need to know what music they can use how to use it and how to give credit to the composers.
Reflection
This animated video fulfills the performance indicator 3c "Mentoring students with safe, legal, and ethical practices when using digital tools." The best way to introduce a subject is often through a concise visual example. This video can be used to foster instruction and deeper engagement with this topic. It is a resource that I can place in an online cache of tools which students can return to it as a resource until they fully understand it. This is a very important equalizer that teachers need to create as students do not have equal access to technology when entering school. In a world where technology is increasingly used to spread false information, harass and track individuals. I mentor students and provide frequent exposure to appropriate practices so they learn to protect themselves, analyze data for accuracy and make positive contributions through technology. I am committed to creating more animated videos to support citizenship.
