Standard 5: Designer
Educators design authentic, learner-driven activities and environments that recognize and accommodate learner variability.

Educators:
-
5a Use technology to create, adapt and personalize learning experiences that foster independent learning and accommodate learner differences and needs.
-
5b Design authentic learning activities that align with content area standards and use digital tools and resources to maximize active, deep learning.
-
5c Explore and apply instructional design principles to create innovative digital learning environments that engage and support learning.
Artifact
This artifact is a fun QR code project that I created as a quick bell ringer activity. Initially I introduced the activity for students in my online dance class. However, I modeled it with teachers as a review activity to demonstrate integration across multiple subject areas to show how teachers can help students make deeper connections and integrate essential learning concepts. The bell ringer project was a hit with the students and had them fully engaged and excited and ready to jump into more rigorous and focused learning. I taught the students how to use the QR code generator and they subsequently made their own lists of giphy's for their classmates to try. On the whole, the activity generated enthusiasm, and empowered the students to generate fun learning materials on their own. It could also be a great way for students to learn new movement.
Reflection
This activity most closely aligns with performance indicator 5b "Design authentic learning activities that align with content area standards and use digital tools and resources to maximize active, deep learning." By incorporating the concept of gamification into the learning activity the students were far more engaged. This simple activity suggested so many more ways that I could use gamification to enhance student learning, facilitate individual difference, and encourage student commitment into the activity. Especially with online education students need ways to stimulate their imaginations and collaborate. The initial activity was very simple and has suggested so many more ways to use this idea to engage students. Already as a result of the demonstration of the activity, other colleagues have designed review strategies that have incorporated many ways for students to direct their own learning individually and collaboratively. I intend to continue to explore this concept as an important teaching and learning strategy in all of my classes.
